Below is a posting from a group on facebook.  It was posted by Tom Davie.  This idea of a statewide homecoming is beginning to catch on......At the end of his posting I have listed the links for the two fb groups that are participating in this effort.  Some of you already belong to fb, others may not.  I suggest that the fb members join the two groups listed below.  Others may not care to join.  For those I will try to keep this page updated for you.

In one of our discussions, this idea came up...
...
"As all of us get older and begin reminiscing more often - especially the Boomers - I am Saint Albans High class of '66 - wouldn't it be something if someone organized a statewide homecoming next summer (2013) THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE STATE OF WEST VIRGINIA...? Think of it...every town in WV celebrating the same thing...the far flung sons and daughters of the Mountain State coming home to reunite with old friends family and surroundings. The 1.8 million people still living in WV would see another 2 or 3 million show up...perhaps an all week event or at least for a weekend! Think of the economic boon to the State! People would talk about it the rest of their lives, and it might even become a regular (every 5 years or so) event!"

Follow transplanted West Virginians and West Virginia Natives come home on FaceBook and you will see that it is gaining traction. Individuals could plan their family reunions for the same time, as well as class reunions that would fall into the 2013 calendar.

As a Florida resident for the last 30 years, the pull to "Come Home" is still great. All of us would love to see the Mountain State put this together. Please move the idea forward to other State agencies and let us know of your progress!
Thanks!

2011 Irish Legends Gala - Congratulations Roseanne!

Picture
The honorees for this year’s Irish Legends Gala have been announced.  They are: Frank Devono (ND ’69), Gabe Devono (ND ’67), Ethel Marie Devono Shorr (ND ’62), Carmine J. Cann, Sr. (St. Mary’s ’48), Rosanne Malfregeot Oliverio (ND ’58), Tom Martin (St.Mary’s ’48), and Dominick Derosa (Honorary).

The Gala is the showcase event for Notre Dame and St. Mary’s Schools.  Irish Legends are graduates of Notre Dame or St. Mary’s High School who are recognized for outstanding achievements and/or significant contributions to the schools and community.

Rosanne Malfregeot Oliverio (NDHS ’58)

Rosanne attended St. Mary’s Grade School and Graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1958.  She is a 1962 graduate of the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, OH where she received a B.M. Ed. Degree.  Her graduate work was done at West Virginia University.  Rosanne taught third grade, music, and language arts at St. Mary’s Grade School while also giving private piano lessons.  She retired from St. Mary’s in 2002 after thirty one years of service, although she continues to substitute teach and volunteer at the school.  She is married to Louis A. Oliverio, also a 1958 graduate of Notre Dame, and a 2006 Irish Legend.  Their two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Jacquie) Wilson and Mrs. John (Claudine) Rogers graduated from Notre Dame in 1983 and 1986 respectively and the tradition continues as their four grandsons are now students at Notre Dame and St. Mary’s:  Philip Wilson, a Notre Dame Sophomore, Austin Wilson, who is in the sixth grade at St. Mary’s.  Andrew Rogers, a 5th grader, and Anthony Rogers, who is in the first grade.  Rosanne is a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish where at one time she served as director of the children’s choir.  Her hobbies include reading, golf, and spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

The Irish Legends Gala will be held at Via Veneto on Saturday, April 16, 2011.

The above information was taken from the Notre Dame & St. Mary's Newsletter.

Mike Frey (NDHS ’58) has suggested a Class Reunion to be held in FL.  A number of our classmates live in FL, and several winter in FL.  Those of us still living in the northeast, mid-Atlantic, and other parts of the country might welcome a little sunshine and warm weather during the winter months.  Please email me with your thoughts about a winter reunion in Florida.

Thanks………………

It has come to my attention that Joan Elder, Pat Elder's wife, is seriously ill.  I ask Pat if it would be all right to alert his classmates by way of the web page to keep Joan in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.  He said yes.  If you would like to send a note to Joan (or Pat), let me know by email and I will give you Pat's email address.

10/28/2010
I received an email from John Larry (NDHS Class of 1957) yesterday with one of the best "it's a small world" stories.  I have posted the email below.  See the picture above.

My wife and I recently spent 2 weeks touring Italy. On the last morning while awaiting a bus to begin a tour of "ancient Rome" I went outside the hotel lobby to check the status. I happen to glance to my left and saw what appeared to be a familiar face. The individual was not looking my way so I walked up to him and asked if he were Jim Carney. Sure enough it was your old classmate who along with his wife had also been seeing some of the sights in Italy and was awaiting a shuttle to the airport. Unfortunately we did not get much time to talk since my tour group's bus arrived shortly thereafter. Too bad since we both had been at the hotel for a couple of nights. Its somewhat ironic to cross paths in a foreign country as the probability must be somewhere near zero. Had I not seen Jim at the crossover in the 57/58 class reunions on Bridgeport hill roughly 10 or so years ago I probably would not have made a connection.
Hope all is well with you.
John

When someone asks me where I live, I tell them Virginia.  When someone asks me where I am from, I tell them Clarksburg, WV.  Keeping that in mind I know that 99% of the people that view this web page feel pretty much the same way.  I have had a subscription to the WV magazine
Wonderful West Virginia
for many years and look forward to receiving my issue.  The latest issue has some information that I would like to pass along to those who visit this site.  A couple of years ago I purchased a copy of The West Virginia Encyclopedia.  It is a big book (927 pages) and has sold more than 17,000 copies.  An online version of this print reference work is now available to the public at http://www.wvencyclopedia.org/   I have visited the web site and found it easy to use.  Believe me it has everything you ever wanted to know about our home state of West Virginia.  I have also added the link to the "other links" page.
